Hi Gemmies! One of the undisputed Queen's of Afro Futurism, Nnedi Okorafor announced she will be releasing a new book for middle grade readers called Ikenga! Ikenga is about a little boy who can access super powers with the assistance of the magical Ikenga. I had no idea what an Ikenga was so I looked it up. Ikenga is a powerful symbol of the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria and is believed to house a person's personal God and ancestors. It can also increase spiritual activation through prayer and sacrifice. This book is sure to be filled with adventure, mysticism, African culture, and pure awesomeness.
The announcement was also accompanied by a cover reveal. I love the muted earth tones featured in this cover. I also of course love that it features a black boy. We don't have nearly enough books that feature young men of color prominently on the cover.
Synopsis from Entertainment Weekly:
“Nnamdi’s father was a good chief of police, perhaps the best Kalaria had ever had. He was determined to root out the criminals that had invaded the town. But then he was murdered, and most people believed the Chief of Chiefs, most powerful of the criminals, was responsible. Nnamdi has vowed to avenge his father, but he wonders what a twelve-year-old boy can do. Until a mysterious nighttime meeting, the gift of a mystical object that enables super powers, and a charge to use those powers for good changes his life forever. How can he fulfill his mission? How will he learn to control his newfound powers?
I have read all of Nnedi's works and cannot wait to read this gem! Ikenga is set to release August 18, 2020. Are you looking forward to reading Ikenga? What do you think of the cover? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment below. Happy Reading!
