A Song of Wraiths And Ruin Book Review

Hello Gemmies! I have an exciting book review to share with you today. A Song of Wraiths And Ruin by Roseanne Brown is the first book in a new fantasy series based on West African folklore. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 and boy it did not disappoint! A Song of Wraiths And Ruin was such an enjoyable read and one that I never knew I needed! I absolutely loved the world building Roseanne Brown has created. It is lush, incredibly detailed, intricate, and has a complex magical system. Her descriptions are so vivid I can picture each location, creature, and person.

A Song of Wraiths And Ruin has moments of anxiety inducing action wrapped in the mystical. But it is more than that, it is also an extremely well written character driven story. I experienced moments of joy, anguish, and frustration with our two main protagonists Karina and Malik. Karina is too quick to action, and Malik is not quick enough. The two shouldn't work together, but they do! I love how Roseanne Brown presented the differences and challenges each character faces; i.e. royal life vs an impoverished oppressed life. She also does a great job shedding a light on anxiety and the effects it can have a on a persons body and mind.

This is a love story but it is also a tale about self acceptance, believing in yourself, and standing up for injustices. We are introduced to a diverse cast of secondary characters and I wish we learned more about some of them. Hopefully that will be coming in the second novel. All in all this is a well developed, thought out, and unique story! Book two can't get here soon enough!!!

If you are a fan of epic fantasies, family drama, palace intrigue, Bad Ass Black Princesses, magic, and slow burn enemies to kind of lovers then go read this book! This gem published by Balzar + Bray is available for order from all major booksellers. I give A Song of Wraiths And Ruin 5 out of 5 gems. I cannot wait to read more stories set in this universe! Happy Reading!
