Alien: The Cold Forge Book Review

Hello Gemmies! I have a new book review to share with you today. Alien: The Cold Forge by Alex White is an original story set in the Alien universe, after the events in Aliens the movie. We find ourselves back in the thick of things as Weyland-Yutani looks to weaponize the Xenomorphs yet again, in order to recover from the failure of the Hadley's Hope colony, aka LV-426.

Alien: The Cold Forge captures the essence of the Alien franchise where we see that humans are the real monsters and greed and the need to control reigns supreme over all. You can bet cash money there is tons of betrayal, action, espionage, and corporate shadiness in this novel. We are introduced to a whole new cast of intriguing and dynamic characters including Dorian Sudler and Dr. Blue Marsalis. Holy hell where do I start?!?! First off there are no real "good guys" in this story, everyone has their own personal agenda they are working on. And at times I just wanted to root for the Aliens to win. Dorian Sudler has got to be the sleaziest, craziest, most despicable bad guy I've come across in a long time. And I loved that the character who ends up being his nemesis, our main protagonist, Dr. Blue Marsalis, is a disabled woman of color with a degenerative disease. She was original and unique and just as devious as Dorian. I have to reiterate that none of the characters in this book are particularly likable but that's what made it so enjoyable. While the story was entertaining and well written, there is more human caused horror than alien horror which prevents this from being a 5 star review for me. I am after all here for the xenomorphs. The alien action that is there however is inventive, gritty, graphic, and pulse pounding.

If you are a fan of the Alien franchise, like monsters in space, chaos, dark science fiction horror, corporate espionage, ruthless bag guys, and heart stopping action give this book a try. Published by Titan Books, Alien: The Cold Forge is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Alien: The Cold Forge 4 out of 5 gems. Happy Reading!
