Hello Gemmies! It's Creature Feature Friday and today I am highlighting the third book in my all time favorite creature feature series by Steve Alten.....MEG: Primal Waters. That's right, I am a Meg Head! It's always sea monster reading season, but there is nothing better than sitting on the beach reading a great sea monster tale. I absolutely love sharks so of course I immediately became obsessed with the MEG series, and MEG: Primal Waters is a great addition to the series. This scientific horror fiction was a lot of fun to read!
MEG: Primal Waters kicks off with a huge time jump after the events in The Trench. We are reunited with our now much older main characters. Jonas is jaded, Terry is suffering from PTSD, Mac is a raging drunk, Tanaka is depressed, and all are on the verge of financial ruin. They also all live pretty mediocre lives compared to the previous books and are pretty bored with themselves and how things turned out.
MEG: Primal Waters focuses more on human drama than the scientific facts and shark carnage that I have come to love from this series. I really wanted to love this book, but it just fell flat for me. If you prefer creature features that focus on emotions and relationship dynamics, you may love this one! The ending is satisfying but It dragged a bit to get there. I hope the next book gets back to the winning formula that makes this series so enjoyable. Although not my favorite in the series, MEG: Primal Waters is essential to continue on with the storyline, so don't skip it!
Eighteen years have passed since Angel, the Megalodon shark broke free of the Tanaka Lagoon and returned to the Mariana Trench. Meanwhile, Jonas Taylor-adventurer, has become Jonas Taylor, middle-aged father of two, overwhelmed by mountains of bills and the daily strife of raising a family. But life is about to change.
A Hollywood television producer wants Jonah to join his new survival series: Daredevils. For the next six weeks, two teams of crazy daredevils on a South Pacific Ocean voyage on-board a replica of a Spanish Galleon will try to outperform one another in front of the cameras. Jonas needs the money, and the job seems easy enough-doing color commentary. But behind the scenes, someone else is pulling the strings. And before it's over, Jonas, Terry, and Mac will again come face to face with the most dangerous creatures ever to stalk the Earth.
If you are a fan of this series, like killer sharks, reality tv shows, relationship drama, and deep sea adventures, go read this book. Published by Forge Books, MEG: Primal Waters is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give MEG: Primal Waters 3 out of 5 gems. I hope you will give this creature feature classic a try!
