Hello Gemmies! It's Creature Feature Friday and today I am highlighting the second book in my all time favorite creature feature series by Steve Alten.....The Trench. That's right, I am a Meg Head! It's always sea monster reading season, but there is nothing better than sitting on the beach reading a great sea monster tale. I absolutely love sharks so of course I immediately became obsessed with the MEG series, and The Trench is a great addition to the series. This scientific horror fiction was a lot of fun to read!
The Trench continues the tale of the now captured Carcharodon Megalodon (aka The Meg). We are reunited with the characters from The Meg a Tale of Deep Terror as they deal with the aftermath of events from Book One. Steve Alten has expanded on the world he created in The Meg A Tale of Deep Terror as we are also introduced to a slew of new characters including a goatee stroking billionaire megalomaniac, a Russian femme fatale, and murderous hired thugs.
The Trench is full of espionage, spies, murder plots, science facts, pulse pounding action, new sea monsters, and you guessed it...more bad guys you root for The Meg to eat! Now I must put a disclaimer in, Is this book over the top? Yes.....but that's what makes it a perfect guilty pleasure and creature feature read. There was more espionage than shark action and that is the only thing keeping me from making this a full 5 star review.
Its appetite is ravenous. Its teeth, scalpel-sharp. For the first time, the captive twenty-ton Megalodon shark has tasted human blood, and it wants more…
On the other side of the world, in the silent depths of the ocean, lies the Marianas Trench, where the Megalodon has spawned since the dawn of time. Paleobiologist Jonas Taylor once dared to enter this perilous cavern. He alone faced a Megalodon shark and cut its heart out. Now, as the body count rises and the horror of a monster’s attack grips the California coast, Jonas must begin the hunt again, and return to the waking nightmare of…
If you love killer sharks, prehistoric sea monsters, espionage, and deep sea adventures give this book a try! Published by Kensington, The Trench is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give The Trench 4 out of 5 gems. I hope you will give this creature feature classic a try! Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment below. Happy Reading!
