Elemental: Shadows of Otherside Book Review

Hello Gemmies! I have an entertaining new book review to share with you today. Elemental: Shadows of Otherside by Whitney Hill is the first book in the Shadows of Otherside Series. I really loved this book. Whitney Hill has mixed a crime mystery with paranormal goodness. I can already tell this will be one of my new favorite paranormal series. Elemental was a super fun and fast read. What originally pulled me in was the cover art. No surprise there, me being the book cover ho that I am. The cover is eye catching, features a woman of color, and immediately lets me know i'm going to be immersed in a world of magic.

Elemental is very much a character driven story. Events unfold from our main protagonist.... Arden Finch's point of view. I found Arden to be relatable and likable. She is flawed and vulnerable and it made her a very realistic character to me. Throughout the novel we see Arden deal with the trauma of her past and the impossibility of her current situation. And while she is a force in her own right, she's also a victim. Trigger warning there is violence against women depicted in this book. This quote probably best sums up her character and why I love her so much. ".......I was tired of being less than so others could be more". Arden goes through a fantastic character arc that kept me flipping pages throughout the night.

Elemental: Shadows of Otherside also has amazing world building. First off, I LOVE that it's set in the RTP area of North Carolina. Since I live here, it gave me a special appreciation for all of the locations. I found myself fully immersed in this world. I'll never look at the Eno River the same way again! Now where Elemental really shines is with the diverse offering of creatures! I mean this book has everything my paranormal heart needs, Werewolves, Witches, Djinn, Elves, Vampires, and more! I enjoyed the complex social/political hierarchy Whitney Hill created for each faction. Elemental not only has plenty of action, magic, plot twists, and mayhem. But it also has a full on mystery, warring factions, murder, and cults! Elemental really has it all.

I would like to just take a moment to recognize the cutest werewolf possible. I am here to say that I am #Team Roman all the way! Whitney Hill don't you dare harm him!!! LOL If you are a fan of mysterious plots, snarky djinn, sketchy vampires, sexy werewolves, double crossing elves, and kick ass heroines then read this book! Published by Benu Media, Elemental: Shadows of Otherside is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Elemental: Shadows of Otherside 5 out of 5 gems. I'm looking forward to reading more adventures set in this universe. Happy Reading!
