Hello Gemmies! I have a book review to share with you today. Heartless by Gail Carriger is the fourth book in the Parasole Protectorate series and follows the continued adventures of Alexia Maccon. This world of spys, steampunk, manners, and the supernatural is such a delight. I found myself completely transported to this fictional Victorian era London.
I love historical fiction mixed with the paranormal, so Heartless was right up my alley! Heartless is an action packed, steampunk, supernatural romantic comedy rollercoaster ride. And it’s just what the doctor ordered. If you are in need of some laughs, like deadly mechanical animals, flamboyant vampires, strong pregnant female leads, excitement, and light romance....this book is for you. This is a series and as such I recommend reading the books in order. Heartless takes place a few months after the events in Blameless. Alexia is very pregnant (8 months) and as a main character remains relatable and engaging. She is even more stubborn and headstrong than ever. We still have our cast of supporting characters that I love with the exception of Felicity. I've had just about enough of her antics! In this book I especially love Lyall we really see his characters backstory expanded.
The world building in Heartless is extremely detailed and we get glimpses of Victorian London life. For the steampunk lovers, there are gadgets, although not as many as previous books, BUT, we do get murderous mechanical porcupines! And of course my favorite part of this series....the paranormal elements are extremely well done. We get a more in depth look into werewolf life. And deal with the consequences of love lost. The romance takes a bit of a backseat in this installment, which is okay with me. Trigger warning this is an adult book not YA so there are some adult sexy situations and innuendos. There are also plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing throughout. I absolutely adore this series and I think you will too.
This gem published by Gail Carriger LLC is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Heartless 5 out of 5 gems. If you like Victorian high society, pregnant heroines, mechanical porcupines, questionable werewolf manners, plot twists, hair muffs, heartache, high fashion vampires, action, and intrigue then go read this book! I look forward to reading more stories set in the Parasolverse. Happy Reading!
