Hello Gemmies! I have a fantastic new book review to share with you today. Please note: I received a digital ARC of this book (via NetGalley) from its publisher in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Remote Control is a new adult novella by African Futurism Literary Queen... Nnedi Okorafor. I absolutely LOVED this book! It is tender, painful, and beautiful all at the same time. There is so much honesty and heart in all of Nnedi Okorafor’s writing and Remote Control is no exception. Our main character Fatima/Sankofa is innocent and scary all at the same time. There is just something so off putting about a child that can wreak utter destruction and devastation with a simple touch. I can imagine Fatima/Sankofa walking out of the forest glowing and scaring all around her. BUT, knowing she is just a child and innocent also makes your heart ache for her. Nnedi Okorafor is so skillful she has a unique ability to make the reader care about her characters on a visceral level. Her characters are always endearing, believable, and relatable. I swear I cannot get through one of her stories without laughing, crying, and just having all the feels.
Remote Control also has some gorgeous world building. We get glimpses of everyday life and rich culture in this slightly futuristic Ghana as we follow Fatima/Sankofa as she goes along on her journey. This tale is told from Fatima/Sankofa's point of view and as the story unfolds, we find out more about this mysterious girl that people both revere and fear.
Remote Control is a beautiful story of how love, loss, purpose, and societal expectations can shape a person. There are still questions that I'd liked answered and I'm hoping this will turn into a trilogy like Binti.
If you are a fan of African culture, coming of age stories, complicated relationships, magic, and page turning suspense then go read this book! Published by Tor, Remote Control releases on January 19, 2021 and is available for pre-order from all major booksellers. I give Remote Control 4 out of 5 gems. Happy Reading!
