Reticence Book Review

Hello Gemmies! I have a new book review to share with you today. Reticence by Gail Carriger is the fourth and final book in the Custard Protocol series. This book was everything that I needed! I loved it so much and I'm very sad that the series is at an end. We follow the continued adventures of Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama aka Rue and her ragtag dirigible crew. The main character of focus in Reticence is everyone's favorite awkward scholar and navigator.....Percy! Please note, this is a series and as such I recommend reading the books in order. Reticence takes place a short while after the events in Competence. You can read this series as a stand alone, but to get the most out of the references, characters, and events, you really should read the first three books in the series. Additionally, we get cameos from characters throughout the entire Parasolverse including my favorites from The Finishing School Series! So if you haven't yet, I beg you, please read The Finishing School series, and the Parasol Protectorate series.

Reticence is a great conclusion to the Custard Protocol universe. I thought the plotting and characterization were fantastic. There is no shortage of harrowing adventures, familial issues, friendship, new love interests, supernatural high society, manners, and humor! We see old friends and meet new ones. I am not ashamed to admit I had a few teary eyed moments. The Spotted Custard's newest addition....Arsenic, is a doctor and the daughter of none other than Preshea...the intelligencer assassin from The Finishing School series, that everyone loves to hate. I really liked Arsenic's character, she was approachable, relatable, and her chemistry with Percy is just adorable! Each character gets a little attention and I loved every scene with my blood thirsty deckhand Spoo.

The world building is expanded in Reticence and our crew finds themselves first back in Egypt and then off to steampunk Japan! The imagery was so vivid and lush, I wish someone would make a show out of this series....I'm looking at you Netflix! We have floating cities, parachute obi's, and more! The plot and all its moving pieces flowed really seamlessly for me and it made for a super enjoyable read. No moments felt forced. Were all the cameos fan service? Absolutely.....but as a fan I am here for every single bit of it! They also made sense to the story and gave updates and or endings to some storylines from other series. I just loved everything about Reticence. It was heartwarming, endearing, pulse pounding, and had several laugh out loud moments. Trigger Warning: this is an adult book and as such there is an abundance of heavy flirtation.

This gem published by Gail Carriger LLC is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Reticence 5 out of 5 gems. If you like witty humor, werefoxes, paranormal weddings, friendship, dirigible travel, socially awkward love interests, and action, then go read this book! I'm so sad this series is at an end, but I am looking forward to reading new stories set in the Parasolverse! Happy Reading!
