Hello Gemmies! I have an exciting book review to share with you today. Please note: I received a digital ARC of this book (via NetGalley) from its publisher in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Wayward Witch by Zoraida Cordova is the third book in the Brooklyn Brujas Series. Each book in the series follows the personal coming of age story of one of the three Mortiz Sisters. I have loved this series so much, so I was more than happy to finally get to read the story of my favorite sister....Rose. This is a wonderful epic fantasy partly set in New York City and the magical fairy realm of Adas. As with all of Zoraida Cordova's books, I need to start with the world building because it is just phenomenal! Zoraida Cordova has created yet another incredibly detailed, lush, rich world with a complex magical system and beyond beautiful creatures. Her descriptions are so vivid I can picture each Adas in my head.
Wayward Witch takes place a few months after the events in Bruja Born. We are reintroduced to Rose our main protagonist on her Death Day. Everyone is putting on the facade that everything is okay but Rose feels unsettled and knows something is wrong. Of course my girl is right and soon she finds herself in an impossible situation. Rose is funny, strong, brave, and very capable. On her journey we are introduced to a broken fairy realm under attack by a mysterious magical entity. We meet a diverse cast of characters along the way, of which my personal favorites are Lin and Iris.
Wayward Witch is full of heart stopping action from the first chapter. But its more than that, it is also an extremely well written character driven story. I experienced moments of joy, anguish, grief, and clutching of pearls. I really appreciated all of the call backs to the Vicious Deep Trilogy and to characters and events in Labyrinth Lost and Bruja Born. This book is special and my absolute favorite in the series! Please, please, please do not let this be the last Brooklyn Brujas book! I loved learning about the different types of Adas and their abilities and hope they will be explored more in future books. Maybe a spin off series? I also hope Lin and Nova will get their own novels.
If you are a fan of epic fantasies, action, magic, complicated relationships, and coming of age stories then go read this book! This gem published by Source Books Fire is available for pre-order from all major booksellers and set to release August 4, 2020. I give Wayward Witch 5 out of 5 gems. I cannot wait for this book to be out in the universe for all to read! Happy Reading!
