Wings Of Ebony Book Review

Hello Gemmies! I have a great new book review to share with you today. Wings Of Ebony by J. Elle is everything I never knew I needed. Let's start with the cover...GORGEOUS! The beautiful imagery immediately pulls you in and lets you know that you are going to get something special. The black, purple, and gold color scheme is both eye catching and intriguing. And once you read the story you realize the gold plays a significant role. This cover is pure Black Girl Magic!

Wings Of Ebony follows Rue, a Black teen from Houston who has had her entire world turned upside down after the murder of her mother. Shortly after she finds out that she is literally magic. I loved this character so much. Rue is beautiful, badass, hard headed, strong, and vulnerable. She is so relatable, I can see myself in her. Wings of Ebony is a journey for Rue to find her voice and power in a world filled with bigotry, racism, and misogyny. J. Elle is able to masterfully confront issues like police brutality, trauma, racism, and white privilege in a fantasy setting. I laughed, cried, and even shouted in frustration! Wings of Ebony is a compelling coming of age story full of magic and retribution.

The world building is gorgeous too; set in modern day Texas and the magical world of Ghizon, It feels both original and familiar at the same time. Wings of Ebony also has a refreshing new magical system steeped in ancestry and misappropriated culture. That alone gives this book a distinct flavor and feel that is unique to J. Elle. There is also an abundant amount of teenage angst, family drama, systematic oppression, and social issues. Trigger Warning for younger readers: there are quite a few cuss words and violence depicted throughout the book.

If you like Black Girl Magic, action, intrigue, strained family relationships, love, loss, and revenge go read this book. Published by Denene Millner Books/Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers, Wings of Ebony is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Wings Of Ebony 5 out of 5 gems. Happy Reading!
